Emma in Morocco

Emma touched base with us from Morocco – you can get more insights from her travels on her blog: http://foodstreetarchitecture.weebly.com/blog

I have moved on from India and now am travelling through Morocco. Firstly I arrived into Casablanca and have spent the rest of the week in Marakech. Next I’m going to briefly explore the landscape of the Atlas Mountains and the desert. Then move up north towards the cities of Fes, Chefchaouen and Tangier.

India was great fun and informative. It is a beautiful thriving country and has a range of atmospheres. The density and adaptability of the people demonstrated some fascinating and simple strategies which engage with the public. There was a unique sense of charm when buildings expressed their functions in an adhoc nature. A particularly revealing aspect when exploring the food realm.

And as a major food advocate I must admit the food was excellent. I loved trying all the variations of the traditional specialities. A very different diet from our own but mainly unprocessed and homemade. After Morocco I shall go to Spain.

Emma arrives in India

Last week Emma arrived in India and touched base with us:
Yesterday I arrived in Mumbai, India, my first stop on my journey. I am travelling with a friend for India and Morocco. Things have been going well so far. We have been exploring the big busy city, seeing some sites and having our first few tastes of the local food.
I still intend to travel just over five months but with a bit of flexibility of dates. A few other places have also come to mind in the region so I hope to squeeze them in (Portugal and Turkey). My rough plan is:
Jan/Feb – India
Feb/March – Morocco
March/April – Spain/Portugal
May – Italy
June – Greece
June/July – Turkey

The 2015 Parker Fellowship was awarded at an afternoon tea event at the University of Newcastle to Emma Gaal. Starting in Asia, Emma will be travelling throughout areas where street food has a great presence. Emma proposed to document the effect of temporary and permanent architecture on how people use the street, especially in relation to food.

The Colin Madigan Commendation was awarded to Nathan Dawes, who will attend a term at the Julian Ashton Art School.

Congratulations to the recipients! Thank you to everyone involved and for the continued support of The Architecture Foundation.

Scholarships have closed, and two rounds of interviews have been conducted at the University of Newcastle. Thank you to all those who put time and effort into their submissions. As always the calibre of students grows every year, making the selection committee’s work so much harder, but none the less rewarding!

We have been busy re-planning the TAF Annual Dinner, the event is taking the new form of a cocktail style presentation evening, with talks from our current scholars. Our guest speaker is head of the Julian Ashton Art School, Paul Delprat.
