The Sydney Art School, founded in 1890 by Julian Rossi Ashton, is a famous institution with an unparalleled background in fine drawing and painting. The school caters for beginners and advanced students alike. The school’s studios are located in The Rocks, by Circular Quay, opposite The Museum of Contemporary Art, and at Georges Heights, overlooking Sydney Harbour at Mosman.
Mr Henry Cornwallis Gibbons was the Principal of the Julian Ashton Art School from 1942 to 1960. He was once asked if there was a unifying principle underlying the unique achievements of the students; and he replied, ‘Ashton used to say to me, “Teach them to see, Gibbons, to see the beauty of the form, the tone and the colour of the world around them and represent it on paper and canvas. Individuality is to be fostered at all times, in the knowledge that technique is the vehicle of the creative spirit.”

It is the philosophy of this School to encourage fine drawing and sound practice in the craft of painting.
In 1988 the School was incorporated and Paul Ashton Delprat, Julian Ashton’s great grandson, himself an ex-student, took over its running, assisted by his wife, artist Susan Delprat. It is notable that throughout its entire history, the school has, without exception, been administered in all its detail by practising figurative artists who are also teachers. This golden thread of many overlapping lives of informed and dedicated artistic scholarship is regarded as one of the most important reasons for the school’s success.

This school is proud of its role in setting standards of rigor in drawing and painting.
The Sydney Art School became unique and highly valued sponsors in 2010 by donating, annually, a full time term of tuition in drawing to the benefit of the current Parker Fellow.
